Myofascial Release Therapy

Myofascial release therapy in Pacific Grove treats chronic pain, fibromyalgia, and movement restrictions by addressing fascial adhesions—the root cause of many long-term pain conditions. Unlike massage that works on muscles, MFR releases the connective tissue web surrounding every structure in your body. Through gentle, sustained pressure, we restore mobility, eliminate pain patterns, and help your body return to natural alignment.

What is Myofascial Release?

Your body is wrapped in an intricate web of fascia, connective tissue that supports and links every muscle, bone, and organ. Over time, due to stress, injury, overuse, or poor posture, this fascia can become tight, restricted, and painful, creating tension that radiates throughout the body. Myofascial Release is a gentle, hands-on therapy designed to target these fascial restrictions. Unlike deep-tissue massage, it uses slow, sustained pressure to encourage the fascia to soften, lengthen, and return to its natural state. This process doesn’t just address pain, it treats the root cause of physical restrictions, helping restore natural alignment, movement, and overall well-being.

MFR typically requires 60-90 minute sessions because fascia needs time to respond. Unlike massage where 5-10 minutes per area may suffice, releasing fascia restrictions requires 3-5 minutes of sustained pressure per restriction point. Rushing the process is ineffective.

How many sessions will I need?

Acute issues (recent injury): 3-6 sessions. Chronic conditions (fibromyalgia, long-term pain): 8-12+ sessions. Results are cumulative—each session builds on the last. Weekly sessions initially, then spacing out as symptoms improve.

What's the difference between myofascial release and deep tissue massage?

Myofascial release uses sustained, gentle pressure (no oil) held for 3-5 minutes to release fascia. Deep tissue uses shorter, firmer strokes with oil to address muscle knots. MFR is slower, gentler, and works with connective tissue; deep tissue is more direct muscle work.

MFR should feel like deep stretching or pressure, not pain. You may feel intense sensation as restrictions release, but it shouldn't be unbearable. We work within your tolerance and adjust based on tissue response. Some areas may be tender afterward.

Does myofascial release hurt?

True healing starts beneath the surface — in the space where fascia holds both pain and possibility.

Important Medical Information

Not a Medical Treatment:
Myofascial release is a complementary therapy, not a replacement for medical diagnosis or treatment. Persistent pain, sudden onset pain, or pain with other symptoms (fever, numbness, weakness) requires medical evaluation.

Requires Time & Commitment:
MFR is not a quick fix. Fascia that has been restricted for months or years needs multiple sessions to fully release. Expect gradual improvement over 6-12 sessions, not dramatic change after one treatment.

Works Best with Other Care:
MFR is most effective combined with proper hydration, movement, stress management, and when needed, physical therapy or medical treatment. It's one tool in a comprehensive approach to healing.

Individual Response Varies:
Some people feel immediate dramatic relief; others need multiple sessions to notice changes. Factors affecting response include chronicity of condition, overall health, stress levels, and adherence to self-care.
