First Visit Guide
What Should I Expect During My First Therapeutic Massage Session?
Feeling nervous about your first massage? That's completely normal. This guide walks you through exactly what happens from the moment you arrive until you leave feeling renewed and relaxed.
You're in Control
Your comfort and safety are the top priorities. You can speak up at any time about pressure, areas to avoid, or anything that doesn't feel right. This is YOUR session, tailored to YOUR needs.
Your Session Timeline
Here's what happens during your visit, from arrival to leaving feeling renewed:
1
Arrival & Brief Consultation
5-10 Minutes (or less)
When you arrive, you'll be greeted warmly. If we've already spoken by phone about your concerns and goals, this will be very brief. If not, we'll have a quick conversation about what brought you in today and what you're hoping to address.
I may assess your posture, range of motion, and specific areas of concern. This isn't a medical exam, it's simply to understand how your body is functioning and what approach will help you most. This is also your opportunity to ask any questions.
2
Privacy & Preparation
5 Minutes
I'll step out of the room to give you complete privacy to undress to your comfort level. Most people undress completely or to their underwear, but you should only remove what feels comfortable to you. You'll lie on the massage table under a sheet and blanket, with only the area being worked on uncovered at any time.
• The room is private and secure
• Temperature is adjusted for your comfort
• Soft lighting and calming music create a relaxing atmosphere
• You're always properly draped for modesty
3
The Massage Session
60-120 Minutes
Once you're comfortable on the table, I'll begin the therapeutic work. I'll check in about pressure throughout the session—therapeutic massage should feel like "good pain," a satisfying release rather than sharp or unbearable discomfort.
During the session:
• I'll work systematically through problem areas
• You can speak up anytime about pressure or concerns
• I'll use various techniques based on your needs
• Only the area being worked on is uncovered
• Feel free to relax completely or ask questions
Some people fall asleep, others prefer to stay engaged. Both are perfectly fine—this is your time to do whatever feels right for you.
4
Post-Session Discussion
5-10 Minutes
After the massage, I'll step out while you get dressed. Then we'll briefly discuss what I found, any recommendations for home care, and whether follow-up sessions would be beneficial. This is also when we'll schedule your next appointment if you'd like to continue treatment.
• Self-care recommendations (stretches, ice/heat, etc.)
• What to expect in the hours after your session
• Suggested treatment plan if ongoing work is needed
• Scheduling your next session
Red Flags: When to Be Cautious
What to Wear
Wear comfortable, loose clothing. You'll be undressing for the massage, so choose something easy to remove and put back on. Don't wear anything you're worried about getting oil on.
Hydration
Drink plenty of water before and after your session. Massage helps release toxins from muscle tissue, and hydration supports your body's natural detox process.
Eating
Don't come on a completely empty or very full stomach. A light meal 1-2 hours before is ideal. Heavy meals can make you uncomfortable lying on the table.
Medical Information
Bring a list of current medications and any recent diagnoses or injuries. This helps me provide the safest, most effective treatment for you.
Arrive on Time
Plan to arrive right at your scheduled time. Since there's no paperwork, we can get started right away. Just give yourself a moment to transition from your day into a relaxed state.
Your Goals
Think about what you want from the session. Pain relief? Stress reduction? Improved mobility? Knowing your goals helps me tailor the treatment.
Common First-Time Questions
How much should I undress?
Undress to your comfort level. Most people remove all clothing or stay in underwear for the best results, but you should only do what feels comfortable. You'll be properly draped with a sheet throughout the entire session, with only the area being worked on exposed.
How will I feel afterward?
Most people feel relaxed, loose, and sometimes a bit "floaty" immediately after. You might experience some soreness 24-48 hours later, similar to post-workout soreness. This is normal and means the muscles are releasing tension. Drink lots of water and use heat or ice as needed.
Will it hurt?
Therapeutic massage can involve some discomfort, especially when working on chronic tension or injury. It should feel like productive pressure, a "good hurt" not sharp pain. I'll constantly check in with you about pressure, and you should always speak up if something doesn't feel right.
How often should I come back?
It depends on your goals and condition. Acute issues might need weekly sessions initially, while maintenance care might be monthly. After your first session, I'll recommend a treatment plan based on what I find and what you're trying to achieve.
A Personal Note About First Sessions
From Your Therapist
I understand that getting a massage for the first time, especially therapeutic work, can feel vulnerable. You are trusting me with your body, your pain, and your wellbeing, and I take that responsibility seriously.
With over 23 years of experience, I have worked with many first-time clients. My goal is always to create a safe, professional environment where you feel comfortable and respected. Your session is centered on your needs, your comfort level, and your healing goals.
If at any point during your session something does not feel right, whether it is the pressure, the technique, or the temperature, please speak up. This is your time, and my role is to make sure you receive exactly what you need from it.
