Insurance Reimbursement

Will Insurance Cover Your Massage?
The short answer: Yes, but with a few important conditions.

At Selina’s Therapy Center, we understand that many clients are curious whether their health insurance will cover massage therapy. While therapeutic and rehabilitative massage can be medically necessary, insurance coverage often varies. Most health plans require a physician’s prescription that includes a specific diagnosis before any massage treatment can be reimbursed.

Currently, we do not directly bill health insurance companies due to the inconsistencies in coverage. However, we are happy to provide detailed receipts and the necessary procedure codes, so you can submit your own reimbursement claim.

Using FSA or HSA for Massage Therapy
If you have a Flexible Spending Account (FSA) or a Health Savings Account (HSA), you can often use these tax-free funds for therapeutic massage—especially if it is prescribed by your doctor. While a prescription is not always required by your FSA/HSA provider, having one helps ensure that your treatment is recognized as medically necessary. Most FSA/HSA cards can be used directly at our center. If not, we’ll provide the documentation you need for reimbursement.

How to Get a Doctor’s Prescription for Massage Therapy

If you’re considering insurance reimbursement for massage, here are the steps you should take:

  1. Review Your Policy
Check your insurance plan to see if it includes therapeutic or medically necessary massage therapy. Not all policies do, so it’s important to confirm this before your appointment.

  2. Support with Research
If massage therapy isn’t a common treatment for your condition, bring supporting evidence—such as articles or case studies—to help your doctor understand its benefits.

  3. Discuss with Your Doctor
Share your symptoms and explain why you believe massage therapy would help. Sometimes, patients must take the initiative to bring it up.

  4. Mention Selina’s Therapy Center
Let your doctor know you’ll be receiving care from Selina’s Therapy Center. We specialize in therapeutic massage rooted in exercise science and rehabilitative practices. We are also happy to speak directly with your physician about our methods, training, and treatment philosophy.

  5. Submit Documentation
Once you have a written prescription, provide us with a copy. You’ll also submit the prescription and our receipts to your insurance provider for reimbursement.

Workers’ Compensation & Auto Accident Claims

If you’ve been injured on the job or in a car accident, massage therapy may be part of your treatment plan. When approved, your insurance provider must authorize the therapy, stating how many sessions are covered and the type of massage prescribed.

Please note: We do not bill insurance or accept medical liens, but we’ll gladly provide you with all required documents to support your claim.

Some providers who may cover massage therapy include Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield, and Humana—but always confirm in advance.
