Why Hypermobility Often Causes Chronic Muscle Tightness

If you're hypermobile, you've probably been told you're flexible. But strangely, you may also feel tight all the time. Your neck and shoulders tighten. Your hips feel restricted. Your back aches. You stretch, foam roll, or get a massage, feel better for a while, and then the tightness comes right back.

That isn't necessarily because you need more flexibility. In a hypermobile body, tight muscles can actually be part of the body's attempt to create stability.

I understand this both professionally and personally. I have spent more than two decades working with the body as a massage therapist, movement specialist, and rehabilitation specialist. I also live with hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, or hEDS.

Learning how to create stability in my own body changed the way I work with other people.


When Flexible Doesn't Mean Mobile

Hypermobility means one or more joints can move beyond the typical range. That can sound like an advantage. Sometimes it is.

But there's an important difference between having range of motion and controlling range of motion. A stable joint has muscles, tendons, ligaments, connective tissue, and the nervous system working together to control movement.

In a hypermobile person, the passive structures around a joint may provide less restraint. The body may rely more heavily on muscular activity to help control that joint.

Those muscles can end up doing a lot of work.

And that can feel like tightness.

Your Muscles May Be Tight Because They're Trying to Protect You

This is one of the most important things I want my hypermobile clients to understand.

A tight muscle isn't always a short muscle. Sometimes it's a muscle that's working overtime.

Imagine trying to stabilize a tent when some of its support lines are loose. You would have to create tension somewhere else to keep the structure steady. The body can do something similar.

If a joint doesn't feel adequately supported, surrounding muscles may increase their activity to help control it. Your upper trapezius may constantly feel tight. Your hip flexors may feel like they need stretching. Your low back may never completely relax. Your glutes may feel tense. Your neck may feel like a collection of knots.

The obvious response is usually:

Stretch it.

For a hypermobile person, that isn't always the answer.


Why Stretching Can Feel Great and Still Not Solve the Problem

Stretching a tight area may provide temporary relief. But if the muscle is creating tension because your body needs stability, you've removed some tension without addressing why it was there.

The nervous system may simply create it again. This is why some people fall into a frustrating cycle:

Tight. Stretch. Relief. Tight again.

They conclude that they need to stretch more. Sometimes they need the opposite. They need better control.

More strength. More proprioception. More stability.

And sometimes they need hands-on work to reduce unnecessary muscle guarding while preserving the stability their body needs.

The distinction matters.

Massage and Hypermobility Require a Different Approach

This is where hypermobility massage can be very different from simply trying to make every tight muscle relax.

When I work with a hypermobile client, my goal isn't necessarily to make them looser. They're often loose enough already. I want to understand why an area is holding tension.

Is the muscle overworked? Is another muscle failing to contribute enough? Is a joint unstable? Is the nervous system guarding an area that has previously been injured? Is the person repeatedly moving into the end range of a joint without realizing it? Is their posture requiring certain muscles to work all day?

Those questions change how I approach the massage. Sometimes an area needs deeper therapeutic work. Sometimes it needs gentle nervous system input. Sometimes another area entirely needs attention. And sometimes I don't want to release a muscle aggressively because I suspect the tension is providing useful stability.

That's one reason finding a hypermobility therapist who understands both soft tissue and movement can be valuable.


The Nervous System Is Part of the Story

Muscles don't make decisions independently. The nervous system controls them.

Your brain is constantly receiving information about where your body is in space and deciding how much muscular activity is needed to keep you safe. This sense of body position is called proprioception.

For people with hypermobility, proprioception can sometimes be less precise. That can make muscular control and joint positioning more challenging. The nervous system may respond by increasing muscular tension. That doesn't mean the tightness is "in your head."

It means your brain, nerves, muscles, joints, and connective tissue are all part of the same system. This is also why I pay so much attention to how a person's body responds during treatment, rather than simply attacking whatever hurts.

Strength Training Can Help, But More Isn't Always Better

The answer isn't simply to lift heavier weights either. Hypermobility training requires control.

I care tremendously about how someone performs an exercise. Can you maintain your joint position? Can you feel which muscles are working? Can you stop before falling into your end range? Can you stabilize your pelvis while your leg moves?

Can your shoulder blade control what happens at your shoulder? Can you maintain alignment when you're tired?

A lighter exercise performed with excellent control can sometimes be far more useful than a heavier exercise performed by hanging on joints and compensating through other areas. This is something I've had to learn in my own body. I am naturally hypermobile. The stability and posture I have today weren't simply given to me.

I've worked for them.


Why I Treat Tightness Differently

After more than two decades of working with clients, I no longer automatically see tightness as something that needs to be removed.

I see it as information.

Why did this muscle tighten?

That's the question. It might be overworked. It might be compensating. It might be protecting an injured joint. It might be responding to poor movement mechanics. It might be part of a larger nervous system response. Or it may genuinely be shortened and restricted.

Treatment depends on knowing the difference.

You May Not Need to Become More Flexible

This can be a strange idea for someone who has spent years stretching tight muscles. But if you're hypermobile and constantly tight, your body may not be asking for more range. It may be asking for more security within the range you already have.

That's where thoughtful massage, strength work, proprioception, movement training, and nervous system regulation can complement one another. The goal isn't to make a hypermobile body rigid. It's to give that body enough strength and control that its muscles don't have to work quite so hard just to hold everything together.

And when that happens, sometimes the muscles finally begin to let go.
